Shane Carwin and Steroids

Monday, August 16th, 2010

I’d say it’s pretty ironic that Carwin would be the one to get tied to steroids when it is always Brock who gets guff for them despite no proof. Then again, false accusations against the champ make sense since he is a no-good pro-wrestling low-life - while Shane is a hard-working everyman and hero to all. Ha.

I’ll let the process play itself out before I pass judgment on Shane, but I will say this, thank God Lesnar won that fight on July 3rd. It would have been terrible for the sport to have Carwin win the title and then have his name tied to performance enhancers. Unfortunately, we live in a society where you’re guilty until proven innocent and this would not be the kind of publicity that Dana and the boys need for their heavyweight champion.

And that’s all I got to say about that…

Stay lucky,
Ken

Win prizes @ the Intelligently Defending UFC 100 Dream Card Contest

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

Intelligently Defending is giving you the chance to make your UFC 100 Dream Card using any fighter in UFC history – logic and feasibility be damned. The entrant with the best card will receive a kick-ass MMA prize package.

See below for rules and prizes.

Rules:

Note: Failure to comply by these rules will automatically disqualify your entry. You will be alerted one time if your form is incorrect and given a chance to fix it. I won’t send back a second incorrect form since complying with these guidelines isn’t rocket science.

1) Your card must have 10 fights total and must include 2 fights from each weight class – Lightweight, Welterweight, Middleweight, Light-Heavyweight and Heavyweight. You must indicate which weight-class each of your fights will be contested in.

2) Of these 10 fights they must be broken up into: 5 prelim bouts and 5 main card bouts – also, your main card must indicate a co-main event and a main event.

3) All fights will be 3 rounds with the exception of your co-main event and main event which will be 5 rounds.

4) In order to use a fighter they must have had at least ONE fight in the UFC – sorry, no Fedor allowed.

5) In order for a fighter to compete in a weight-class they must have had at least ONE fight in that division.

Note: These fights can have happened in any organization. For example, in 2004, B.J. Penn moved up to 185lbs to fight Rodrigo Gracie in K-1 – so Penn can be used as a middleweight on your UFC 100 card. Make sense?

Note: Refer to weight classes they fought in later in their careers for any fighters who were already gone from the UFC by the time the unified rules came around – i.e. Royce Gracie, Dan Severn etc.

6) It is assumed that all fighters will be competing in their prime.

For example: If you choose Ken Shamrock you will be getting him when he was still the “World’s Most Dangerous Man” not his current incarnation of the “World’s Biggest Joke”. The same goes for current fighters – if you choose Chuck Liddell, you will get the Chuck Liddell of a few years ago and not the current Liddell.

7) Fighters can only fight once per card – so no tournaments.

8.) There is no stopping you from pairing up two fighters regardless if they are friends/teammates.

Entries will be judged on:

1) Creativity: Did you think outside the box in coming up with your fights?

2) Use of resources: Did you explore all your options when choosing the available fighters?

3) Card structure: Is your main event the biggest fight on your card? Does the co-main event make sense as a five round fight?

Send entries to dreamcardcontest@gmail.com.

All entries will be due by JULY 6, 2009 with the winner to be announced on JULY 10, 2009.

Prizes:

The winner of this contest will be sent:

Note: All prizes will be brand spankin’ new.

1) UFC Octagon by Kevin Lynch

This is the hardcover photography book the UFC came out with last year.

Note: This will be the normal hardcover edition and not the $2,500 deluxe version – that’s a little too rich for Intelligently Defending’s blood.

2) Choke DVD

This is the highly acclaimed, and somewhat rare, Rickson Gracie documentary from 1999. A must see for all MMA fans.

3) UFC Ultimate Comebacks DVD

This action packed DVD includes the following full-length fights:

1. Pete Sell vs Scott Smith
2. Alessio Sakara vs Drew McFedries
3. Martin Kampmann vs Drew McFedries
4. Renato Sobral vs Jason Lambert
5. Keith Jardine vs Houston Alexander
6. Jon Fitch vs Roan Carneiro
7. Colin Robinson vs Eddie Sanchez
8. Paul Taylor vs Marcus Davis
9. Chris Leben vs Terry Martin
10. Jon Koppenhaver vs Jared Rollins
11. Roger Huerta vs Clay Guida

Major props to Intelligently Defending webmaster Jason Sawtelle for helping get this thing off the ground.

Let the games begin!!!

Correction From Reader

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

Hey all,

We got a comment in regards to my thoughts on a possible C.B. Dollaway/Tim Creduer fight where I said the two have never fought before.  Dickie wrote:

You forgot that after Jesse Taylor’s ejection from the show, CB and Tim were brought back to fight for the right to face Amir in the finals. CB won by decision. It was a good fight, and I’d be happy enough to see them fight again, but your statement above is incorrect: CB and Tim have already fought.

Right you are, sir.  A (rather large) oversight on my part.  Thanks and good eyes.

Apologies for the lack of updates this week - I’m going to put together a mailbag tomorrow for anyone interested.

Happy New Year!

Filho Fails to Make Weight

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

Paulo Filho came to the WEC weigh-in four pounds overweight yesterday and as a result his fight with Chael Sonnen will now be a three-round non-title affair – not good.

To me, this means one of two things:

1) He didn’t give a shit about training for this fight because he thinks it will be a cakewalk or because he knows the WEC middleweight title is going to be dissolved in a few months anyway.

If this is the case, screw him.

OR

2) His head is not on right stemming back from his stint in rehab a few months ago and he shouldn’t be fighting.

If this is the case, I hope he gets things worked out.

As I mentioned in my predictions yesterday, I thought Filho would win this fight easily if he had everything in order. Clearly, he does not have everything in order for whatever reason.

He can still win, but I can’t cheer for him now in good conscience so I’m amending my prediction:

Prediction: Sonnen, Decision

Also, why do they make it a non-title fight if the champion doesn’t make weight? It’s the challenger who is now at the disadvantage, so why should he be penalized?

I’m sure there is a logical answer to this, but I can’t think of it.
