Video of the Day: Frank Shamrock/Kenny Florian Highlight

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Major props to Intelligently Defending reader Ryan for today’s Video of the Day, a Frank Shamrock and Kenny Florian highlight.

The video was made by Genghis Con who I have been a fan of for awhile now.  If you haven’t seen his work you can check it out at his official website.  He really does incredible highlight promos.

Video of the Day: Fred Ettish vs. Johnny Rhodes UFC 2

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Sorry for the lack of updates this week, things have been a bit hectic.

However, there is always time for a video of the day and since I mentioned Fred Ettish in a post last week and realized that a lot of readers may not know who he is. So, in order to familiarize everyone with the legend, here is the clip of Fred’s first and only UFC appearance.

Note poor Fred standing in the background awaiting his interview time towards the end of the video.

Check back tomorrow for the announcement of the Intelligently Defending UFC 100 Dream Card Contest…

Well-Rounded Skills #3

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

I put in some long hours for The Man yesterday so I never got around to publishing this – so here’s a rare Saturday post from Intelligently Defending.

Props to MMAjunkie and MMAmania where I found all of these stories.

1) UFC to induct two new members at UFC 100 Fan Expo

The most illegitimate Hall of Fame in professional sports will be adding two members in July.

Here are my early wagering lines on who is getting the nod:

- Evan Tanner — 1-1

- Charles “Mask” Lewis — 3-1

- Chuck Liddell — 6-1, I don’t think he goes in until his retirement is official

- Matt Hughes – 10-1, Not sure he doesn’t have another fight in him pending what happens with Serra

- John McCarthy – 30-1, I’m pretty sure he’s currently on Dana’s bad side which means we wont be seeing him in there anytime soon.

- Don Frye – 100-1, I love the old dog, but I don’t see him ever getting in.

- Fred Ettish – 5,000-1

- Tito Ortiz – 1,000,000-1

2) Shaq is training MMA

Apparently, the big fella is training MMA:

I don’t have anything to say about this, but figured it would give me the opportunity to post my all-time favorite Shaq video:

For the record, the 2002 Western Conference Finals was one of the most bad ass playoff series ever.

3) UFC releases a bunch of fighters

A number of UFC fighters were given pink slips over the past week, let’s go through them one-by-one:

- David Loiseau – not very surprising given how soundly he was defeated by Ed Herman.  He just never took his game to the next level – the Franklin fight can be pinpointed as start of his downward spiral.  It’s hard to recover from such an epic ass whooping.

- Ryo Chonan – the Japanses vet never impressed in his UFC fights.  It’s back to Japan where he can probably still make a nice pay day.

- David Bielkheden – he was pretty highly touted when he came into the UFC, but never lived up to the hype.

- Jason MacDonald – I’m very upset about this one.  Jason was always an exciting fighter and most of his losses were to top competition.  He just needs a few wins outside the UFC and then they will be happy to bring him back I imagine.

- Jason Day – defeating Alan Belcher was the only thing of note he accomplished inside the Octagon.

- Vinny Magalhaes – one of the best BJJ players around, but he cant take a punch to save his life and seems to lack heart.  He’s still very new to the game though so we could see him again if he is able to put some wins together.

- Antonio Mendes – I liked his fight with Thiago Silva – that’s really all I got to say.

That’s it – see everyone Monday.

Video of the Day: Mark Coleman After Defeating Shogun

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

When it comes to Mark Coleman you are guaranteed a few things:

1) He’s going to wrestle - that’s it
2) He will probably be gassed about 3 minutes into a fight

And, most importantly…

3) He is a great interview

Seriously, the guy has had laughing out loud too many times to count.  Half the time he isn’t even trying to be funny – but, for whatever reason, I can’t help cracking a smile.

This brings us to this week’s video.

Only minutes after defeating Shogun via freak accident at Pride 31, and nearly inciting a riot between Hammer House and Cute Box in the process, an enraged Coleman went backstage with the cameras rolling.  What ensued was comedic gold – take a look…

It’s possible I’m the only person that found this clip so funny, but it never fails to have in stitches.

Video of the Day + Dustin Hazelett out until 2010

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

I’m a little pressed for time today so we’ll pull the old switcheroo and throw out a quick Video of the Day and save The Judge’s Scorecard for tomorrow.

I was just delivered some crushing news that my main man Dustin Hazelett is on the shelf until early 2010 with a torn ACL - those things are hard to come back from 100%.

Man, between Dustin’s and Joe Lauzon’s injuries, my favorite fighters are dropping like flies. Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery for McLovin and a continued recovery for Joe.

Anyway, in honor of Hazelett here is a cool video from YouTube of the top ten MMA arm bars where the Haze makes a cameo at #2.

Check back tomorrow for a new Judge’s Scorecard – topic TBD… any suggestions?

Video(s) of the day

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Two videos for everyone on this lovely Thursday.

First up, the promo for the boxing match between Tim Sylvia and 48-year-old Ray Mercer to be held June 13th.

This is once of the funniest things I’ve seen in awhile. How anyone involved could have taken this seriously is beyond me.

Back in my days at MMArated I wrote a column defending Timmy as a lovable loser who has gotten a bad rep. I stand by this column more than ever after watching this commercial. How can anyone hate such a lurchy doofus?

Next, we got probably the best knockout I’ve ever seen. No idea what org its from, but damn, its cool as hell.

Check back tomorrow for some potpourri on the big stories floating around the world of MMA.
